Em realidade, este número especial é uma comemoração da vida luminosa do Angelo entre nós.

The acetone extracts of S. acuta and S. rhombifolia inhibited yeast α-glucosidase (IC50 8.49 ± 0.66 and 8.10 ± 0.34 µg mL-1, respectively) and showed mild activity on DPPH and TPA tests. Among the isolated compounds 5 was active in all evaluations.

Carvacrol and trans-β-caryophyllene are widely found several medicinal plants, being assigned to these compounds various pharmacological properties. Therefore, this work presents a validation method for these compounds in the species of Lippia sidoides and Rosmarinus officinalis and a copaiba oil sample available in popular trade in Fortaleza. Thus, essential oil samples were diluted and analyzed in a gas chromatograph with mass spectrometric detector (GC-MS). Validation parameters showed satisfactory values, such as linearity, lower limit of detection and quantitation, reproducibility at different days (inter-day) considerable analysis and recovery values. Of the compounds studied, the Lippia sidoides species presented a percentage of 32.01 of carvacrol and 1.78 of trans-β-caryophyllene, respectively. To R. officinales found a percentage of 0.28 and 0.34 respectively for carvacrol and trans-β-caryophyllene. For oil copaiba not logged carvacrol, however, the trans-β-caryophyllene, was present in amount of, 74.5%. With the results, the method can be considered as a useful analytical tool for quality control of trans-β-caryophyllene and carvacrol and the derivatives in the essential oils.

The Croton heliotropiifolius Kunth species is used to treat stomach discomforts, vomiting, dysentery and as antipyretic. This work was developed in order to perform a phytochemical screening of the methanol extracts of the stem, flowers and leaves of the species C. heliotropiifolius, and evaluate toxicity on Artemia salina. The stem extracts, flowers and leaves showed yields of 22.7 %; 31.4 %; 14.2 %, respectively. The presence of chemical compounds such as flavonoids in leaves and flowers, coumarins stem and in lower concentrations in the flowers has been identified. Alkaloids and saponins are absent in the studied material. The methanol extracts showed high toxicity (CL50 values <80 µg / mL) to Artemia salina. This study may contribute to the deepening of knowledge of the chemical composition and toxicity of this species.

Chagas disease, which is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, has been commonly treated by nifurtimox and benzonidazole, two drugs that cause several side effects. As a result, the use of natural products for treating neglected diseases has increased in recent years and plants have become a promising alternative to developing new medicines. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the chemical composition of the essential oil from fresh flowers of Eugenia klotzchiana and to evaluate for the first time its trypanocidal and cytotoxic potential in vitro. The essential oil from the fresh flowers was obtained by hydrodistillation carried out by a Clevenger apparatus and its chemical composition was determined by GC-MS. The main compounds found in the essential oil were sesƋuiteƌpeŶoids: β-caryophyllene (21.1%), bicyclogermacrene (10.2%) and spathulenol (20.9%). Results showed that the essential oil had strong trypanocidal activity against the trypomastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi (IC50 = ϮϬ.Ϯ μg/ŵLͿ aŶd ŵodeƌate ĐLJtotodžiĐitLJ agaiŶst fiďƌoďlasts iŶ the ĐoŶĐeŶtƌatioŶ ƌaŶge ;CC50 = ϮϮϬ.ϯ μg/ŵLͿ. IŶ shoƌt, the essential oil from fresh flowers of Eugenia klotzchiana can be considered a new source of bioactive compounds for the development of antiparasitic drugs.

In this study the chemical composition of Bauhinia longifolia leaves was evaluated. The phytochemical study of the methanolic extract from the leaves of B. longifolia led to the isolation and structural elucidation of aglycone quercetin and its 3-O-monoglycoside derivatives: quercetin-3-O-α-arabinofuranoside, quercetin-3-O-α- rhamnopyranoside, quercetin-3-O-β-glucopyranoside and quercetin-3-O-β-galactopyranoside. Flavonoid structures were determined using a combination of techniques, including HPLC-UV, ESI-MS and NMR, in addition to the literature data. The antioxidant activity of the hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and butanol (BuOH) fractions from the partition of the methanolic extract from the leaves of B. longifolia was evaluated by the DPPH radical reduction method and expressed in terms of its CE50. The highest antioxidant activity was observed for EtOAc fractions (CE50 = Ϯϭ.Ϯ μg/ŵLͿ aŶd BuOH ;CE50 = ϭϲ.ϭ μg /ŵLͿ fractions. They were also evaluated for total phenol content by the Folin-Ciocalteau spectrophotometric method, which revealed high ĐoŶĐeŶtratioŶs of pheŶoliĐ ĐoŵpouŶds iŶ EtOAĐ ;ϯϵϯ.ϴ μg EAG/ŵgͿ aŶd BuOH ;ϰϮϮ.ϰ μg EAG/mg) and low total pheŶoliĐ ĐoŶteŶt iŶ hexaŶe ;Ϯϯ.ϴ μg EAG/ŵgͿ aŶd diĐhloroŵethaŶe ;ϲϭ.ϵ μg EAG / ŵgͿ fraĐtioŶs. For the first tiŵe the antioxidant activity of B. longifolia leaves is reported, as well as the presence of the monoglycosides avicularin, hyperin and isoquercitrin, flavonoid commun on Bauhinia genus, but never described for B. longifolia. Thus the present study contributes with the chemical and pharmacological knowledge of B. longifolia, a great medicinal importance specie.

Kielmeyera coriacea, a typical tree species of the Cerrado (Brazilian Savanna), popularly known as “pausanto" and it is used in traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases. This study aimed to chemically characterize the essential oils of leaves and fruits of K. coriacea and to evaluate its antitumor activity against human tumor cell lines MDA-MB-231 (breast tumor) and DU-145 (prostate tumor) as a way to search for new drugs derived from natural sources. Essential oils were extracted by hydrodistillation in Clevenger. The average yield of essential oil of leaves and fruits was 0.38% and 0.0041%, respectively. In leaves from K. coriacea, the major compounds found in the essential oils, were geranyl linalool (27,78), 2- Acetate (2E) Tridecenol (9.06%), E-nerolidol (7.70%) and α-bisabolol (5,09). The major compounds found in essential oils of fruits were D-germacrene (18.94%), neointermedeol (12.18%), bicyclogermacrene (12.00%), Viridiflorol (9,30 %), Globulol (8,76%), Epi-α-muurolol (8,13%) aŶd δ-cadinene (5,00%).. The essential oils of fruits inhibited the proliferation of tumor cell lines DU-145 and MDAMB-231, as well as of the non-tumor cells (FH -Human fibroblasts). By contrast the essential oils of leaves were not active in any tested tumor lineage. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the chemical composition and antitumor activity of this species, and it clearly enhance our chemical knowledge of this plant.

The isatin is an attractive and versatile molecule. This should be the definition of isatin by Professor Angelo C. Pinto, a scientist with the soul of an artist who dedicated part of his career to the chemistry of isatin and used it as a starting material in several new reactions. Fluconazole is an azolic second-generation antifungal drug and is part of the National List of Essential Drugs (RENAME) of the Brazilian Ministry of Health. It is considered as first choice for the treatment of some opportunistic fungal infections and also applied in the AIDS treatment program as prophylactic therapy to avoid these infections. Due to the importance of fluconazole for the Brazilian Health System (SUS), it is strategic the domain of its obtaining process. Thus, improvements in the synthesis of this substance are also of special interest. In this work, many changes were proposed and carried out in the original fluconazole synthetic route, aiming to increase yield and using solvents and processes with a lower environmental impact. With these optimizations, the overall yield achieved was 53%, which is about 10 times higher than that of the original process.

The synthesis of several xanthenes based on the 1,3-dicarbonyl scaffolds lawsone and coumarin was developed using tandem three-component reactions involving the reagents ortho-hydroxybenzaldehyde, as bifunctional reagent, and an appropriate thiol. These reactions generated two series of para- and ortho-naphthoxanthenes that are structurally related to β- and β-pyranaphthoquinones and one series of coumarin-xanthene derivatives.

Chiral bis(7)-tacrine compounds were synthesized in yields ranging from 40 to 80%. Both enantiomeric series were found to be potent AChE and BuChE inhibitors in vitro, with IC50 values ranging from 2 to 16 nM and from 30 to 140 nM, respectively.

Coencapsulation of t-DCTN and t-DCTN:HP-β-CD into PCL and PLGA microspheres were developed using factorial design. Oral formulations of PLGA microparticles containing t-DCTN and/or t-DCTN:HP-β-CD were obtained to be applied in in vivo studies.

The inhibitors of the enzymes tyrosine kinase (ITKs), also known by "tinibs", have been used as the most modern and effective tools in the treatment of several types of cancer. This article is a compilation of a huge series of tyrosine kinase inhibitors, recently approved or under clinical trials, containing in each of them information such as: the first chemical synthesis, the mechanism of action against cancer, clinical trials stage and price in the market.

This work presents relevant aspects of history, chemistry and technology of paper. In addition, two processes were presented to obtain sheets of handmade paper from papyrus (Cyperus papyrus) stem and paina (Ceiba speciosa). In the case of paina, long cellulose fibers with characteristics suitable to produce hand made paper for inkjet printing were obtained.
